O3 Gallery Exhibition: Writing for 5.

Through a series of abstract paintings and prints based on disjointed words and phrases, Writing for 5 aims to evaluate the relationship between poetry and abstraction. Each painting has been allocated a corresponding piece of music which is printed on the individual labels. Music has been used to blend lyrical phrasing with colour and form. Whilst the work is primarily associated with the poetry seen throughout the exhibition in the form of linocuts the music adds another dimension to the paintings. Poetic phrases are enacted within the paintings ambiguously so that the original intentions of the poetry are brought into question. This ensures that no “trace of that objective reality which makes up the normal background of our everyday existence” (M. Seuphor, 1958) thus adhering to cultural expectations of abstraction.
